Hudson man claims $50,000 Powerball prize nine days before expiration, lottery officials say

As two $100,000 Mass Cash prizes remain unclaimed, a Hudson man came forward on Tuesday to claim a $50,000 Powerball prize he won on a ticket for a June 22, 2022 drawing, just nine days before the ticket was due to expire.

Danny Thomas of Hudson claimed the Powerball prize at the Massachusetts State Lottery office in Braintree on Tuesday, state lottery officials said.

Thomas told lottery officials that he and his wife found the winning ticket after hearing about unclaimed lottery prizes on the radio.

The couple then checked the numbers on the state lottery website and found out that they had won, lottery officials said. They plan to use the winnings to buy a new car.

The winning ticket was bought at Sunoco at 422 Main St. in Hudson.

Meanwhile, lottery officials are urging local residents to check their older tickets bought last year, as two unclaimed $100,000 Mass Cash grand prizes won on tickets purchased for separate 2022 drawings are nearing expiration.

The dates of those unclaimed winning tickets, the place of sale, and the winning numbers are as follows:

  • June 19, 2022 at Seven 86 Market, 249 Blue Hill Ave., in Roxbury, with the numbers 01-09-11-21-31;

  • July 10, 2022 at Stop & Shop, 545 Lincoln St., in Worcester, with the numbers 01-04-08-21-30

Mass Cash and Powerball prize winners have one year from the date of the drawing to claim prizes.

Lottery prizes that expire become part of the net profit that the lottery returns to the state for distribution to all 351 cities and towns, officials said.

Prizes up to $103,000 can be claimed at lottery headquarters in Dorchester or at lottery claim centers in Braintree, Lawrence, New Bedford, West Springfield and Worcester. Regular business hours at all locations are Monday through Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding state holidays.
