The Hudson Middle School Science Olympiad Team recently finished third at the Ohio State Tournament where they competed against the top 40 schools from across the state of Ohio. The event was April 29 at the Ohio State University French Fieldhouse.

The Science Olympiad team spent six weeks preparing, with The Build Crew spent countless hours rebuilding and retooling their mechanical devices, and the student testers pounded away at practice tests and study materials. It was a monumental effort, and the students were rewarded with one of the best finishes in the team’s short history. The last time HMS was on campus at Ohio State for an in-person state tournament was in 2019 where the team finished in 22nd place and won the program’s first two state medals. Fast forward four years and one pandemic, and a third-place finish with 17 medals was a monumental step forward. The HMS Science Olympiad team also won the Westlake Invitational and Akron Regional tournaments, finished in second at the Sylvania Southview and Kenston tournaments, and earned third place at the Solon and West Liberty Salem tournaments.

Their achievements are a testament to the love and support of their families, as well as the tireless efforts of parents, school administrators, school custodial staff, volunteers, and sponsors who have all contributed to ensuring these students have the best opportunity to achieve their goals. Coaches Dr. Jordan Renna and Chirag Patel both noted that they are honored to be a part of this program and are grateful for the support of the community, the Hudson City School District administration and staff, as well as the sponsors including the Northeast Ohio STEM Alliance, Burton D. Morgan Foundation, Hudson Community Foundation, Hudson Kiwanis Foundation, Lianda Corp., Don Patron Mexican Grill, Chipotle, and dozens of individual donors.

Solon Middle School took first place and Mason Middle School took second place, both advancing to the US National Tournament in May. The Hudson Middle School students that earned medals at the state tournament were: 1st place: Home Horticulture (Maria Metoki/Mariam Khankan); 2nd place: Anatomy & Physiology (Emily Shott/Emma Liu), 2nd place: Crave the Wave (Jerry Du/Sherry Li); 2nd place: Crime Busters (Jerry Du/Sherry Li); 2nd place: Disease Detectives (Elena Cheng/Emma Liu); 2nd place: Roller Coaster (Hajoo Yu/Kate Justice); 2nd place: Solar System (Anna Barger/Elena Cheng); 2nd place: Sounds of Music (Evan Lee/Sherry Li); 3rd place: Can’t Judge A Powder (Jerry Du/Sherry Li); 4th place: Green Generation (Anna Barger/Emily Shott); 5th place: Bio Process Lab (Emily Shott/Gemma Ward); 5th place: Bridge (Evan Lee/Maanav Patel); 5th place: Code Busters (Jerry Du/Maanav Patel/Sherry Li); 5th place: Dynamic Planet (Elena Cheng/Gemma Ward); 5th place: Fast Facts (Anna Barger/Emily Shott); 5th place: Forestry (Gemma Ward/Millie Griffiths); 6th place: Run it Code it (Duy Tran/Hudson Reaper).
