Hudson rollover crash leads to hours of road closures; local man charged

HUDSON — Police say a local man faces several charges after his car rolled over on Washington Street during rush hour on Tuesday, blocking traffic for hours.

Police arrested Vagner Gomez, 47, at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in connection with the crash, Police Chief Richard DiPersio said in a statement.

On Tuesday, an officer working traffic patrol about 5 p.m. near 227 Washington St. (Route 85) saw two cars driving northbound on Washington Street at a high rate of speed.

“It appeared the two vehicles may have been racing,” DiPersio said in the statement.

The officer attempted to pull over the two cars. One vehicle immediately stopped, but the second continued while increasing its speed, the chief said.

“Moments later, Officer (Pat) Kerrigan observed the vehicle had crashed at the intersection of Washington Street, Houghton Street and Brigham Street,” according to the statement. “The vehicle had lost control, crashed and turned over.”

The driver, Gomez, and a woman who was a passenger were each injured and taken to area hospitals for treatment. The nature of their injuries wa not disclosed.

The crash resulted in portions of all three roads being closed for several hours during the investigation, which was conducted by the Hudson Police and the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council’s accident reconstruction team.

Police arrested Gomez on Wednesday as he was released from the hospital. They charged him with operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor (second offense) and driving to endanger. They also cited him for a marked-lanes violation.

DiPersio said the crash remains under investigation and that more charges are possible.
