BOYS GOLF

Suburban League Final Tournament

A cold day at Good Park Golf Course yielded a pair of photo finishes for the Suburban League boys golf conference crowns.

In the National Conference, Stow and Hudson each finished with rounds of 320, forcing the winner to be determined by the fifth-golfer tiebreaker. Hudson No. 5 Nico Gamboa shot a round of 85 compared to 93 from Stow No. 5 Tyler Cheetham, giving the Explorers the tournament and overall title. Wadsworth finished third with a 323.

"First of all, hats off to Stow, hats off to Wadsworth and North Royalton for taking it all the way down to the wire," said Hudson coach Matt Vilenauve said. "To come into a tournament like this and have it be this close right to the end, I haven't seen anything like it in the seven years I've been hanging around Hudson golf."

The individual race in the National Conference was just as tight.

Hudson's Sam Fauver won medalist honors with a five-over-par round of 77. He edged a quartet of golfers who finished at 78, including Stow's Ben Skripac and Mitchell Tyger, North Royalton's David Swab and Wadsworth's Brian Myers.

By virtue of his performance in earlier league tournaments, Skripac was named National Conference Player of the Year.

In the American Conference, Kent Roosevelt scored its first league title in years, winning a three-team race with a score of 323. Highland finished second with a score of 325, while Aurora was third with 332.

The Rough Riders were led by American Conference Player of the Year Liam Curtis, who finished with a score of 75, which was the best round in either conference. Curtis is the son of Roosevelt coach Ben Curtis, who won the 2003 British Open.

Highland's Zach Butcher and Aurora's Carson Joy finished seconds with 78s, while Roosevelt's Gavin Leslie, Revere's Jack Kindle and Tallmadge's Caleb Fairhurst each shot 79.

FOOTBALL

Ellet 42, North 6

Following a scoreless first half, the Vikings (1-6, 0-2 in City Series) got a perfect start to the second half, when Damier Kelly returned the kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown.

After that, it was all Orangemen.

Ellet (3-4, 1-1) put up 42 unanswered points to run away with the win. The Orangemen finished with a 333-28 edge in total offense and forced three North turnovers.

Terrance Thomas Jr. had a monster game running the ball for Ellet with 23 carries for 213 yards and three touchdowns.

Ellet quarterback Jake Flossie completed 11 of 19 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Knowles and Jramayne Williams each caught a TD pass, and Will Harmon scored a TD after recovering a fumble.
