Hudson Valley fall foliage report: Where can you see some color in the Hudson Valley?
Driving down any street in the Hudson Valley, you're likely to see a picturesque scene of reds, oranges and golds. The autumn season officially began Sept. 23, and the trees have finally started to show off their most famous features.
According to New York's fall foliage report from Oct. 18, Greene County and Delaware County trees are past peak foliage this week at higher elevations, but most are at full or mid-peak with red, orange and purple leaves. Walton and Delhi residents in Delaware County are reporting peak bright red leaves across their communities at 85 to 100%.
Sullivan County trees hit their peak this week with a 75% leaf change near Port Jervis and Forestburgh. However, some trees are already looking bare if they are past-peak.
In Ulster County, trees hit their peak this week with 70% of trees showing yellow and red leaves. Kingston trees are near peak foliage too, with 60% of trees showing bright reds, oranges and yellows.
The Lower and Mid-Hudson Valley is showing off the best of its colorful leaves, but the show's not over yet. Orange County is at mid-peak foliage with a 50% change in leaf color near Goshen. Newburgh and Cornwall are predicting a 30% change, only showing the start of leaf color change.
In the Mid-Hudson Valley, trees in Dutchess County towns like Beacon, Fishkill and Poughkeepsie are approaching their midpoint this week at 45% change, with mostly bright yellow and orange leaves with bits of red. Putnam County residents reported only a 30% change, but more color is being observed on scenic highways like the Taconic State Parkway and Route 9.
Rockland County is reporting a 55% change this weekend, with leaf peepers in New City observing red, orange and purple leaves. Westchester County is observing a 50% change in White Plains with some green trees still lingering, but most showing red and orange leaves.
New York City and Long Island trees are still farther behind than the rest of the state, but observers are seeing more and more color popping up across the cityscape. Suffolk and Nassau County leaf aficionados are predicting a 30% change near Shelter Island and Montauk Point in Suffolk County, and a similar 30% change at Hempstead Lake State Park and East Meadow in Nassau County. But the North Shore is farther ahead than the rest of the area, with leaf observers predicting a 50% change.
Trees on the Upper East Side of Manhattan have been exhibiting a 35% change with a mix of green, orange and yellow, while Bronx and Brooklyn leaves are still hesitant to let go of summer at 20%.
