Hudson Valley snow, rain create slick driving conditions on Monday

Snow covered much of the Lower Hudson Valley overnight Sunday though the worst of the winter storm subsided by Monday morning.

Snow that fell steadily overnight had mostly turned to rain by the morning in parts of the region, leading to slick conditions on the roads and small pockets of powers outages.

Con Edison, New York State Electric & Gas, Orange & Rockland and Central Hudson all reported some power outages throughout the area, including more than 1,000 Westchester customers.

The region saw between less than an inch of snow in lower Westchester and as much as 10 inches further north in Ulster County, according to the National Weather Service.

Drivers should expect slippery conditions, though air temperatures rose above freezing this morning, according to AccuWeather.com.

While a winter storm advisory ended at noon for parts of the region, a coastal flood warning was issued for the sound shore in Westchester until 1 p.m., according to AccuWeather.com. A flood warning was issued in Poughkeepsie and New Paltz until around 7 p.m. and a winter storm warning remained in place in Sullivan County until 5 p.m., according to AccuWeather.com

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines said most of the precipitation is over with the rest of Monday "generally dry." Temperatures aren't expected to go up much from where they are now, which is around 40 degrees, he said.

Monday night temperatures will dip below freezing again, Kines said. But he noted the wind will dry off most of the roads by then.

"Whatever slush there is, if there is any, can freeze tonight so that's something to watch out," Kines said. He noted the upper part of the region might have more slush due to higher snow accumulation.

"There weren't any surprises with this storm," Kines noted.

While the worst of this winter storm is behind the region, about 1,300 Con Edison customers in Westchester had no power as of mid-afternoon Monday. Most of the outages were in Greenburgh, White Plains and Yonkers, according to an outage map. Restoration is expected by 9 p.m., according to Con Edison.

On the road, there were several accidents reported to 511 throughout the morning, including a few on the Taconic State Parkway, that have now been cleared.

Town of Yorktown Highway Superintendent Dave Paganelli encouraged residents in a Facebook live video on Monday to watch out for black ice on the road. He said highway workers were salting roads in preparation of icy conditions later today as temperatures dip again.

"Roads are very, very slippery," Paganelli said.
