Hughes paces Panthers

Dec. 15—STORRS — Maddie Hughes scored 10 of her game- high 17 points in the first half as the E. O. Smith girls basketball team opened the season on Tuesday night with a 45- 31 Central Connecticut Conference inter- division victory over Southington.

Lili Clark added 10 points and combined with Hughes to score 10 points in the second quarter when the Panthers outscored the Lady Knights by a 12-3 margin to take a 27- 15 lead into halftime.

Paige Raynor and Jill Dingler each added six points for E.O. Smith.

Lily Cooper led Southington, which was voted ninth in the New Haven Register/ GameTimeCT pre- season state poll with 12 points.

3-pointers and finished with 19 points to lead RHAM past Maloney, 46- 40, in a CCC inter- division game in Meriden.

Sarah West added 12 points and Linnea Carlson grabbed 13 rebounds for the Raptors.

RHAM broke things open at the start of the third quarter when Evans made three consecutive 3- pointers that opened up a 32-20 lead.

All- State senior Jaylice Rosario scored 14 of Maloney's 16 fourth-quarter points and led all scorers with 21 points.
