Barstow Police have launched an investigation after human remains, including a skull, were found in a desert area south of The Outlets of Barstow and east of Interstate 15.

A man walking his dog Friday in the desert south of The Outlets of Barstow found and reported human remains including a skull to police.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department initially responded to the call, but when they determined the area east of Interstate 15 was officially in Barstow city limits they called in local police.

Barstow police detectives and evidence technicians responded and assumed the investigation. Detectives found several personal items at what appeared to be the dead person’s camp.

The Sheriff’s-Coroner Division found there were no signs of trauma to the skull. The human remains have yet to be identified.

No other information about the state of the body or how long the remains have been in the area were released.

The area is in the rarely traveled desert area between Outlet Center Drive and the interstate.
