With kitten season coming up and needs expected to increase, the Humane Society Serving Crawford County is holding unique fundraiser called From Love to Litter.

Local residents have a chance to get a little catty about their exes for a good cause after a little scroll through social media led to a unique and fun event organized by the Humane Society Serving Crawford County.

Hannah Schafer, who is the feline housing specialist for the agency, came up with the idea for the From Love to Litter event that began Feb. 1 and will run through Monday, Valentine’s Day.

“I saw that another Humane Society in another state was doing this type of event. It is such a cute idea so I thought we should try it here,” said Schafer.

The event allows area residents to make a $10 donation to write the first name only of their ex-partner in kitty litter.

“People can come in to do it or they can make a donation through our site using PayPal and we will write the ex’s name for them,” Schafer said.

What do you get if you donate $50?

People can also make a donation of $50 to get an entire litter box dedicated to their ex.

“We are taking photos of the names in the litter and will be posting them,” Schafer said.

She said that the name of the donor will not be released and only the first names of the exes will be written in the litter.

She said that several people have already taken part in the fundraiser and that the money raised will be used for something special at the Humane Society.

“We currently have 20 cats as well as kittens up for adoption. Kitten season is right around the corner and we have recently received our first litter,” said Schafer.

What will be the donated money be used for?

She said the agency does not receive any type of government funding and operates solely on the generosity of donors as well as fundraisers.

“We have our bingo game that is held every Wednesday which helps out a lot, but we are so grateful for the generosity of those in our community,” said Schafer.

The agency also takes donations of products, such as dog and cat food.

“We use Purina Kitten Chow for the kittens. We use canned, wet food for them since it is easier to digest,” Schafer said.

She said the main objective of the Humane Society is to ensure animals are adopted into good, loving homes.
