Humane Society of Harford County helps 4-month-old kitten with fractured leg

Mar. 30—The Humane Society of Harford County saved Margo, a 4-month-old kitten, with a fractured hind leg. Margo was found as a stray in Edgewood and brought to the shelter by a good Samaritan, according to Bob Citrullo, executive director of the animal shelter.

On March 15, Margo underwent surgery to amputate her right hind leg. The surgery was successful and she has a transdermal patch on her back, which is providing a continuous delivery of pain reliever.

"Within 24 hours she was up and moving around, navigating to her litter box, food and water bowls," said Erin Long, marketing and development manager. "She got her drain removed and was placed in a foster home with one of our experienced foster parents. This is a big step for her so she can continue working on building her strength and just being a normal cat."

Many new amputee pets get their sparkle back around the time stitches come out, according to the news release. It can take several weeks before Margo builds enough endurance to go on a short walk around the room.

Margo will be available for adoption within two weeks, according to Long. Anyone who is interested in adopting her should fill out the shelter's online application: harfordshelter.org/news-events/2020/03/cat-adoption-application.

Margo's treatment was covered by the Humane Society of Harford County's Phoenix Fund, which covers animals brought to the shelter that need surgery, x-rays or other costly treatments. To donate, go to the Humane Society of Harford County website: harfordshelter.org/animals.
