HARBOR SPRINGS — The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society is participating in a national 24-hour family-friendly shelter slumber party event this weekend.

The Shelter Slumber ‘Pawty’ — set to take place from noon on Saturday, March 25 to noon on Sunday, March 26 — is designed to increase awareness for shelter animals and raise funds for a new transport van.

The 24-hour event will take place at the shelter, located at 1300 W. Conway Road in Harbor Springs.

During the fundraiser, shelter staff will host a number of activities, including children’s programming, a pizza party, movies, volunteer opportunities, face painting, a raffle, an adult painting class and more. There is no cost to attend or participate in the event.

Humane society officials said they hope to raise awareness about the number of animals that end up homeless in shelters each year and raise funds through a matching gift campaign to purchase a new transport van. The van will directly support the organization's intra-state Movin’ On Up Program.

According to the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, the Best Friends Animal Society has committed to funding half of the cost of the van at $22,500 and the organization is looking for support in funding the other half. The Movin’ On Up Program helps transport rescue animals in at-risk situations to Northern Michigan so they can find new homes.

The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society has established coalition partners in southern Michigan where the need for rescue is high. Southern Michigan coalition partners currently include Bark Nation, Dog Aide, Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society and Detroit Animal Care and Control. In 2022, the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society rescued 372 animals through transport alone.

“Our goal is to raise $45,000 to purchase a van which will allow us to increase our capacity to save more lives,” said Little Traverse Bay Humane Society Executive Director Danielle Blasko. “We are so very excited to announce that we have the opportunity to participate in a matching gift campaign through Best Friends Animal Society who will match every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $22,500. Right now, our supporters can double their impact by making a gift to this campaign.”
