Humane Society in Ozaukee County reopens for adoptions after closing due to staffing shortages

Ozaukee County residents looking to find a new best friend are now in luck.

The Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus has reopened after closing in September due to staffing shortages.

"Over the last few months, we've hired and trained new awesome staff," said spokesperson Angela Speed. The campus reopened on Dec. 2. On the first weekend, the Humane Society found homes for 14 animals, Speed said.

The Ozaukee Campus, 630 West Dekora St., Saukville, is open for adoptions on Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec. 24, and Saturday, Dec. 31, the hours will be noon to 4 p.m.

Across the Wisconsin Humane Society system — with locations in Racine, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Green Bay and Door County — there are currently about 900 animals up for adoption.

For a lot of families, December can typically be a great time to adopt a new animal, said Speed. "A lot of people have extra vacation time and more time on their hands to help their animal adapt. So we do encourage people to check us out during this month."

For individuals on the fence about adopting, they can consider fostering an animal. Animals are usually sent to foster homes because they're too young for adoption or they're recovering from an illness, said Speed.

Fostering can be a short-term commitment, such as a couple days, or it can be for several weeks.
