Fans of Channel 4 and AMC series Humans were disappointed to learn last month that the show would not be returning for a fourth season.

Now actress Katherine Parkinson, who starred as Laura Hawkins in the series, has spoken about the show's sudden cancellation.

"I love the show and I think, you know, it did do three series and that's a big chunk of your life. I actually think the last series was very strong and it is just kind of the nature of what we do," Katherine told Digital Spy exclusively.

"So I didn't feel sadness. I actually just thought what a lovely job that was and it was a really happy job and it came at a great time for me.

"But you know, it is quite tough doing eight hours of television, especially with young children. I think we did a very good job and it'd be awful to do something that was total rubbish."

Katherine then discussed potential reasons why the show was cancelled, saying the ratings were perhaps to blame.

"It critically did so well, but it just didn't, for whatever reason, get the ratings, and sometimes that can be an accident of when it's gone," Katherine continued.

"I think it was the World Cup and all the rest of it, and that's just the way it is and people have to respond to the ratings."

The actress added that, while there may be a future for it on a streaming platform, if this really is the end she's happy with how it turned out.

"It was such a nice job and it ended without losing quality," Katherine said. "It was philosophical, talking about ethics, and I’m pleased it didn't change its personality."

Katherine will next be seen in BBC Two's forthcoming Defending the Guilty, where she plays pupilmaster Caroline, whose job is to wake up her bright-eyed student barristers to the confusing and often disappointing realities of the law.

Defending the Guilty is set to air on BBC Two later this year.
