Humphrey the cat loves to cuddle. Help him find a home this holiday season

Like Alice in Wonderland, Humphrey has fallen through the looking glass and everything is the opposite of what it once was.

Judging from his appreciation of human attention, it’s clear that he once had ample opportunities to luxuriate in caresses.

Before he arrived at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter, however, that world disappeared, leaving 3-year-old Humphrey homeless.

Back when his world turned upside-down, this resourceful kitty discovered the food dishes of other cats. This solution no doubt pleased Humphrey but was a flop with the resident kitties and their owners.

Soon his only comfort was a tempting bowl of cat food in a trap. Then he was whisked away to the county animal shelter.

Given Humphrey’s distress at being trapped, Humphrey was initially mistaken for a feral cat. Though within days of his arrival, he showed his true colors as a loving kitty who appreciates cuddles.

According to 2020 shelter data, 736 felines came to the county shelter as strays — but only 65 stray cats were claimed by their families.

Humphrey yearns to travel back through the looking glass to where he’s a much loved kitty relaxing into someone’s loving touch — kneading imaginary bread with his paws and knowing every kitty treat is his.

To help Humphrey and all the shelter cats and dogs find homes this holiday season, all adoption fees are half-off through December.

For more information about Humphrey (ID No. 272741), call the volunteer line at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter at 805-781-4400 or visit www.slocounty.ca.gov/aserv. The shelter is located at 885 Oklahoma Ave., off Highway 1, in San Luis Obispo.

The full-price adoption fee is $81 for cats and $115 for dogs, plus a $28 county license fee for dogs, if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents.

The adoption fee includes a new collar, a spay or neuter operation, basic vaccinations, a microchip and eligibility for a free veterinary check within San Luis Obispo County. Cats also are tested for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus, and adopters receive a carrier.
