STORY: At the Dhammakaya temple on the outskirts of Bangkok, tens of thousands of lanterns were lit up with images of Buddha as people prayed in their dimly-lit surroundings.

Phramaha Thossaporn Punyangkuro, Vice Director of Communication at the Dhammakaya Foundation, said Visakha Bucha Day "has been recognised by the United Nations to be one of the world's important days because it was the day that Buddha was born, enlightened and (reached) nirvana."
