Hundreds impacted by power outages as winter storm hits

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Hundreds of San Diego Gas & Electric customers lost power Thursday amid another downpour from a strong winter storm.

Nearly 2,000 households in the southern San Diego neighborhoods of Nestor, San Ysidro and Otay Mesa were impacted by the outages as of 12:30 p.m. According to SDG&E’s outage map, power is expected to be restored by 2:30 p.m.

The utility company says equipment damaged during heavy rainfall events is often what leads to these weather-related outages.

San Diego issues evacuation warning for flood-prone areas ahead of storm

During the previous bout of rain, over 25,000 people were without power at one point, some brought on by the submerging of equipment in flood waters that swept through communities across the county.

SDG&E is reminding the community if they come across any downed electrical equipment, assume it is energized. If flooding moves inside your home, the utility company urges residents to focus on evacuating safely.

“We do not recommend that you go to your electrical panel and start flipping switches because water is conductive and if you’re messing around with your breakers, there is a chance you could end up electrocuting yourself,” said Alex Welling, communications manager for SDG&E.
