Hundreds of lawsuits filed in NC against HPV vaccine maker Merck

NORTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Lawsuits continue to mount against a company that manufactured the Gardasil HPV vaccine in the Carolinas.

Since 2022, Merck has faced nearly 200 lawsuits nationwide from plaintiffs, who say they have suffered from serious autoimmune and neurological issues after getting the vaccine.

For years, patients have been coming forward with concerns and complications after getting the Gardasil HPV vaccine. The plaintiffs are from all over the country. Some were as young as 12 years old when they first got the shot.

The lawsuits are being filed in the Western District of North Carolina Charlotte Division. While many claim they’ve experienced similar symptoms as a result of the Gardasil vaccine, one out of Texas said she’s had life-altering symptoms including chronic body pain and memory problems.

Another from Ohio says she suffered from seizures, and joint pain and was eventually diagnosed with Celiac disease and Chron’s disease following the series of injections.

In Illinois, one teenager says her blood test revealed her hormone levels — was that of an elderly woman…and was diagnosed with premature ovarian failure based on her severe post-Gardasil symptoms. The list of complaints is extensive.

Plaintiffs argue Merck exaggerated the drug’s effectiveness and pushed Gardasil using trusted doctors all while masking side effects. The CDC published a fact sheet on Gardasil saying the drug is safe. It cited various formal studies on adverse effects.

One revealed Gardasil wasn’t associated with events related to autoimmune and brain systems. The CDC maintains the benefits of cancer prevention far outweigh the verified risks of fainting and redness or swelling of the arm.

A representative with Merck released a statement to Queen City News stating, “Nothing is more important to Merck than the safety of our products and the patients who take them. The overwhelming body of scientific evidence — which includes more than 20 years of research and development — continues to support the safety and efficacy profile of our HPV vaccines. We, along with regulatory authorities such as the FDA and other organizations around the world, continue to conduct post-marketing surveillance to monitor the safety of our HPV vaccines. We will vigorously defend against these cases.”
