Hundreds of Minnesota Teachers Strike For Second Day in St Paul

Schools were closed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on Wednesday, March 11, for the second consecutive day as local teachers staged strike action to protest a lack of services for students and demand better contracts.

According to reports, around 36,000 public school students were out of school on Wednesday due to the strikes. Negotiations, which began last May, halted early on Tuesday morning after six days of mediation.

The teacher’s union, SPFE Local 28, was asking for mental-health teams in every school building, multilingual staff, and additional educators working with students with special needs, local media said. School superintendent Joe Gothard said the union’s proposal would cost an additional $30 million a year, a sum that he said the district could not afford.
