Hundreds withdraw from besieged HK campus

Dozens of protesters in Hong Kong tried to escape from the besieged Polytechnic University.

They were seen clambering on to waiting motorbikes, and driven away by supporters.

In the early hours of Tuesday (November 19), a small number of protesters also handed themselves over as the police tightened their cordon around the campus.

Footage showed police moving into the buildings.

One student journalist was told to lie on the ground in a medical center, before being led out into the campus that now looks like a battlefield.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said 600 protesters have now left the campus, while over 100 protesters remain inside, citing police estimates.

"Actually, I'm quite scared and nervous, because the police is all around the university now, and they take control of the other areas' protesters, and they can't help us. [...] So I'm not sure, maybe I will die, I'll get arrested today, but anyway we will try to fight here and don't let the police hit us again."

The campus has seen the most violent clashes between protesters and police in five months of demonstrations.

Protesters repeatedly hurled petrol bombs, while police fired tear gas and water cannon in an attempt to keep them from leaving.

The city's hospital authority reported more than 100 injuries on Monday (November 18), with one female in serious condition.
