Katniss Everdeen fans, listen up.

The author of the Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins, is writing a prequel to the acclaimed trilogy which sold more than 100 million copies.

Publishes Scholastic confirmed that the as-of-yet untitled novel will be published in May 2020.

Little is known about the plot of the story yet but it will be set 64 years before the events of the Hunger Games - a compulsory battle to the death of children from each district in the dystopian location of Panem.

The books, Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, saw the 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen volunteer in place of her younger sister to take part in the first game. Throughout the trilogy, Katniss fights to protect her district, family and friends from further threats.

The new book will focus on a time before Katniss in the 'Dark Days' after a failed rebellion in Panem.

'With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are and what we perceive is required for our survival,' author Collins said in a statement. 'The reconstruction period 10 years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days - as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet - provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.'

The original books were made into four hugely successful movies with Katniss being a breakout role for one Jennifer Lawrence. Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz and Stanley Tucci were also in the various films.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate - the distribution company behind the films - are already eyeing up the rights to produce the prequel movie.

When May 2020 comes, it's likely we'll be inside reading for the most part.
