Hunterdon County performs weekly record number of COVID tests

FLEMINGTON – Hunterdon County performed a record number of COVID-19 tests last week and has decided to keep its testing center open until the end of June.

A total of 720 tests were performed at the testing center in the Hunterdon Shopping Center at Route 202-31 and Reaville Avenue.

Since the center, operated by Vault Medical Services, opened in February, more than 6,300 tests have been performed.

The center "continues to see brisk business," County Commissioner Shaun Van Doren said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Protection, for the first weeks in May, Hunterdon County saw a steady rise in case.

But in the past seven days prior to May 24, the number of cases has dropped 1.6%, according to the CDC.

The positivity rate for the week ending May 22 was 11.3%, an 1.8% drop from the previous week.

The center is performing mandated tests on schoolchildren and those who are concerned they may have symptoms before visiting friends or traveling, Van Doren said.

The test site is a resource to businesses because it creates options for employers and employees, particularly for those who have a medical or religious reason that prohibits vaccination, Van Doren said.

The center is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Hunterdon County Health Department is also offering COVID-19 booster vaccinations by appointment at the Route 12 county complex. The next date is June 1. Appointments can be made online or by calling 908 788-1351.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been 23,657 confirmed cases in Hunterdon and 217 deaths.
