Need a backpack? Lafayette Marshal, other community groups hosting school supply give-away

It's back to school season across the area and that means new friends, bus routes, bedtimes, and back-to-school shopping. Over the past several months the effects of inflation have been felt across the country.

With the need for new uniforms, shoes, and enough school supplies to last a few months, the financial toll can be heavy. Across Lafayette, organizations are taking steps to help lighten the load for those in need.

The Lafayette City Marshal's office and community organizations are hosting a backpack giveaway event on Saturday.

The marshal's office has partnered with the YMCA and the Rotary Club of Lafayette South to host the event for the second year. The giveaway will be at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of Destiny of Faith Church at 409 Patterson Street.

There will be a drive thru set up so people can stay in their cars while the backpacks are handed out. To get a backpack, children must be present with a parent or guardian.

Various other groups across Acadiana are also giving out school supplies as the new school year approaches. Organizations like the Good Fight Foundation, Blue Cliff College, and Healthy Blue are handing out a variety of supplies and services, ranging from backpacks to haircuts.
