Huntington Beach police shoot man accused of wounding bicyclist

A man accused of shooting a bicyclist was shot by Huntington Beach police officers Monday afternoon on the grass strip above Sunset Beach, authorities confirmed.

Officers responded at 12:20 p.m. to reports of a shooting near South Pacific Avenue and 7th Street, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department. When they arrived in the area, they found an armed man near South Pacific and 3rd Street.

The armed man ignored multiple commands by officers, at least one of whom opened fire and shot him, police said. A gun believed to belong to the man was found at the scene, they added.

The man, who police identified only as from Norwalk, was given first aid at the scene before being taken to a hospital, where he was in critical condition Monday night, police said.

Police found the wounded bicyclist who they believed was shot by the man they fired upon a few blocks north of the police shooting scene on south Pacific Avenue, according to the department.

The male victim was taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition as of Monday night, police said.

Investigators don't believe the victim and suspect knew each other, police said, but they are continuing to investigate what led to the initial shooting.

Further information on the shootings was not available Monday night.

The Huntington Beach Police Department has asked the Orange County Sheriff's Department to lead the police shooting investigation.
