Huron Police probe threat at high school

Huron High School campus in New Boston, MI

Huron Township Police investigated a threat involving a student with a weapon at Huron High School Friday.

Multiple students reported that another student approached them on the campus at 32044 W. Huron River Dr., New Boston, and made statements that he had a loaded weapon in his backpack. The suspect then made a direct threat to one of the reporting students, said Everette Robbins, director of public safety for the township.

School administration, in cooperation with police staff, immediately located and took the suspect into custody pending a further investigation. A search of the student, the student’s backpack, and the student’s locker was conducted, but no weapon was located, Robbins said in a release to the media.

The 17-year-old student was arrested and will be lodged at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center pending charges, he said. The investigation will be sent to the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

“We will always err on the side of caution and do everything we can to ensure the safety of our students,” he said. “We are fortunate to work with our local school administrations that share that same goal. It is unfortunate that some students still haven’t figured out that threatening statements will not be taken as a joke and will ultimately get them taken into custody and charged,”

He asked parents to again talk to their students and “reinforce that these threats are unacceptable. Interrupting the learning process is not funny and they will be held accountable.”

Police responded to the school in the late afternoon and the police department’s school resource officer also arrived along with the detective bureau, Evidence Technician Team, Traffic Services Unit, Command Staff, Community Policing Officers and on-duty patrol staff.

The building was secure at all times, and all staff and students were safe during the probe, school officials said in a statement.
