Huron's Jacobs falls in semifinals of Division 2 state bowling

New Boston Huron’s Donnie Jacobs made a strong bid for a Division 2 individual state bowling title Saturday at Century Lanes in Waterford.

Jacobs won twice during match play before dropping out as the top seed during the semifinal round.

The Huron senior earned the top seed after leading all bowlers during the qualifying block with a six-game series of 1,501. He bowled games of 257, 239, 259, 279, 258, 209 to take top billing in the bracket.

In the first round, Jacobs bowled 243-193 for a 436 series to defeat Jackson Northwest’s Kolbe Hamlin with a 333.

Jacobs then went on to a 488-384 win over Garden City’s Brenden Haley in the quarterfinals. Tecumseh’s Owen Williams defeated Jacobs 416-389 in the semifinals.

Williams also eliminated Airport’s Colin Peterson. Williams won 469-317 in the match play quarterfinals. Peterson qualified 12th for match play and won in the first round 438-377 against Greenville’s Devin Knickerbocker.

Gibraltar Carlson’s Jordon Bryson qualified 15th and fell in the first round of match play to Zeke Heerema of Grand Rapids Catholic Central 435-369.

Huron’s Bradley Hughes (32nd) and Hayden Williams (37th), and Carlson’s Bobby Walter (45th) did not make it out of qualifying.

In the Division 2 girls bracket, Airport’s Ryan Giese qualified eighth but dropped a 413-345 series to Chevelle Jaynes of Niles in the opening round.

Huron’s Addison Dolencic (26th), Veronica Richardson (28th), Mariah Nutter (29th), and Olivia Demick (34th) came up short in qualifying. Milan’s Rachel Peladeau (40th) and Carlson’s Hannah Krolak (50th) also bowed out early.

Monroe had a pair of All-State bowlers in the Division 1 competition at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park. Evan Eagle and Alexis Wooldridge-Lang both fell in match play.

Eagle was 11th in the qualifying block and went on to win in the opening round of match play. He bowled 197-199 for a 396 series. That bested the 385 from Macomb Dakota’s Connor Rogus.

Eagle lost in the quarterfinals 448-336 against Rockford’s Tony DeLuccia.

Woolridge-Lang also was 11th in qualifying. She fell in the first round to Utica Ford’s Grace Polega 371-273.

LJ Robertson placed 46th during boys qualifying, and Teagen Pillette was 54th in girls qualifying.

In Division 3 at JAX60 in Jackson, Bella Thomas of Flat Rock (34th) and Liberty Ostrander of Dundee (35th) fell in qualifying.

Abagale Johnson of SMCC finished 27th in qualifying in Division 4 at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek. SMCC’s Steven Hypio was 40th.
