Hurricane Dorian Whips Up Waves and Strong Winds on Approach to the Bahamas

A category 5 Hurricane Dorian continued its approach to the Bahamas on September 1, as the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, warned of a period of “life-threatening storm surge” through to Monday, September 2.

The Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Hubert Minnis, tweeted that he was “praying for everyone’s safety”, with his office’s account tweeting that the Abaco islands were bracing themselves for a direct hit from Hurricane Dorian.

The Bahamas Meteorological service posted an extensive warning on its Facebook page, saying that “a prolonged period of life-threatening storm surge accompanied by large and destructive waves up to 15 feet above normal tide” were to be expected.
