Hurricane Fiona Downs Power Lines, Trees on Dominican Republic's Southern Coast
Local residents of La Romana, Dominican Republic, reported heavy rain and downed trees and power lines as Hurricane Fiona reached the country on September 19.
The storm made landfall in the Dominican Republic in the early hours on Monday, bringing maximum sustained winds of an estimated 90 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The NHC warned of the potential for “life-threatening and catastrophic” flooding across the country.
The Dominican Republic’s Center of Emergency Operations reported 16 provinces were on red alert, including La Romana, and 16 provinces were on yellow alert on Monday due to “heavy downpours, electrical storms and gusts of wind.”
