Tropical Storm Ian: Trees down in York County; 1,000+ out power in York, 200K in SC

Trees fell on power lines Friday afternoon in the Rock Hill area, leaving more than 1,000 customers in York, Chester, and Lancaster counties without electrical service.

Duke Energy and York County emergency officials said the outages were from Tropical Storm Ian’s winds and rain. The utility said in a statement outages are expected to continue as Ian moves inland. It made landfall as a hurricane on the South Carolina coast near Georgetown and heads north and west. It was downgraded to a tropical storm Friday afternoon.

At around 4:30 p.m., emergency officials and sheriff deputies in York County reported trees were down in Rock Hill, York, and Lake Wylie near the North Carolina state line.

Downed trees and power lines were reported on S.C. 49 in Lake Wylie, Pinecrest Drive in Rock Hill, and in areas of York, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office reported some trees in roads.

Lancaster outages of around 1,000 customers around 2:30 p.m. were mainly near S.C. 5 east of Rock Hill and the York County line, according to the Duke Energy outage map. Lancaster County Emergency Management Director Darren Player said the outage was reported around 1:30 p.m.

Another 300 York County Duke customers who lost power in Lake Wylie earlier Friday had service restored.

York Electric Cooperative Vice President Marc Howie reported a downed tree caused a temporary outage for almost 1,000 customers in the Fort Mill area off S.C. 160 near Dam Road and Tega Cay. York electric crews repaired the damage in less than an hour and restored service, Howie said.

200,000 without power in South Carolina

Around 200,000 customers around South Carolina were without power as of 2:30 p.m., The State newspaper reported.

York, Chester, and remains under a tropical storm warning from Hurricane Ian.

The area expects to see rain and winds through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
