Hurricane Ian closures and cancellations: What you need to know

As Hurricane Ian continued its trajectory this week, South Florida’s city and county offices, as well as schools and universities, announced continued closures and cancellations. There are also some reopenings now. The state of Florida has activated its price-gouging hotline.

This report will be updated constantly as new information becomes available.

Here’s what we know so far:

School cancellations

Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County public schools: Broward schools will reopen on Friday. All three school districts remain closed on Thursday. Extracurricular activities, athletics, evening classes and adult education classes are canceled.

As for the status of Friday classes, Miami-Dade County officials tweeted late Tuesday morning: “A decision about the status of schools for Friday, 9/30, has not been made at this point. Updates will be provided.”

Florida International University: Normal FIU operations are scheduled to resume on Thursday. Call the university’s 24-hour hotline at 305-348-2277 or visit FIU.edu.

Florida Atlantic University: All classes, including online classes, are suspended on all FAU campuses through Thursday. A decision about Friday has not yet been made. Call the FAU hotline at 888-832-8695 or visit FAU.edu.

Keiser University: Keiser’s campuses in Miami, Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are expected to remain closed on Thursday, the university announced in a Wednesday release and on its website. Call 877-353-4737 or go to KeiserUniversity.edu.

Palm Beach State College: All campuses will remain closed on Thursday, and all online classes are canceled. Call 561-967-7222 or go to PalmBeachState.edu.

Nova Southeastern University: The university’s campus and office locations in Broward and Miami-Dade counties are expected to reopen on Thursday. However, NSU is not yet reopening its Palm Beach County campus, and “instruction will remain ONLINE/VIRTUAL for [these] students on Thursday, September 29, 2022,” according to a university release. “Normal class schedules and building operations are expected to resume on Friday, September 30.” Go to Nova.edu/hurricane.

Miami Dade College: Classes and operations resumed on Thursday, according to mdc.edu.

Countywide and other closures

  • Most Broward County managed parks are open on Thursday. These sites are closed because of storm damage or flood conditions:

Brian Piccolo Sports Park & Velodrome, 9501 Sheridan St., Cooper City.

Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium, 3700 N.W. 11th Place, Fort Lauderdale, will reopen Thursday night.

Easterlin Park, 1000 N.W. 38th St., Oakland Park.

Fern Forest Nature Center, 201 Lyons Rd. South, Coconut Creek. Nature trails are closed.

Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center, 3501 S.W. 130th Ave., Davie. Horse trails and nature trails are closed.

Markham Park & Target Range, 16001 W. State Rd. 84, Sunrise. Mountain bike trails and target range are closed.

Pine Island Ridge, 3900 S.W. 100th Ave., Davie. Horse trails are closed.

Sunview Park, 1500 S.W. 42nd Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Athletic fields are closed and park has no power.

Tradewinds Park & Stables, 3600 W. Sample Rd., Coconut Creek. Athletic fields, disc golf course, horse trails are closed.

Tree Tops Park, 3900 S.W. 100th Ave., Davie. Gumbo Limbo shelter, horse field and trails, island area (east side of lake), multipurpose field, picnic areas, playgrounds, and walking trails are closed.

  • All Palm Beach County government operations, including parks and recreational facilities, will be closed on Thursday. The Emergency Information Center will open at 7 a.m. on Thursday. Residents can call 561-712-6400 with questions about the storm.

  • The Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County remained closed on Thursday. Call the club at 561-683-3287 or go to BGCPBC.org.

  • Broward courts will be closed Thursday, with any “essential matters handled as if [on] weekend schedule,” according to Chief Judge Jack Tuter. Miami-Dade County in-person court hearings remain suspended Thursday, but there may be remote hearings “in certain limited circumstances,” said Eunice Sigler, director of the Office of Government Liaison and Public Relations.

  • Palm Beach County’s circuit courts remained closed on Thursday. “We anticipate reopening on Friday, September 30th,” according to a news release. Visit 15thcircuit.com or call the emergency hotline at 561-355-6744.

  • All Broward County library branches reopened for their standard hours of operation on Thursday, with the exception of the North Regional and South Regional branches, which planned to reopen on Friday.

  • The U.S. District and Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida reopened its West Palm Beach courthouse on Thursday. Courthouses in Fort Lauderdale and Miami will remain closed.

  • All Pollo Tropical restaurants in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties reopened on Thursday. Go to PolloTropical.com.

  • All Presidente Supermarkets locations are open. Go to PresidenteSupermarkets.com.

  • Waste collection has restarted in unincorporated Palm Beach County. Residents should place all garbage, recyclables, yard waste and bulk waste curbside by 6 a.m. as usual. There will be no make-up day for residents who missed collection service on Wednesday. The SWA Greenway Trail system remains closed and will not reopen until they can be inspected and cleared of any debris. The Palm Beach Emergency Information Center has been activated, and residents may call 561-712-6400 for information.

  • In Broward County, Waste Management resumed collection services on Thursday. Residential customers will have service on their next scheduled collection day. Bulk collection is on track except in Parkland and Lauderhill, where it is scheduled for Thursday. Commercial service is resuming and will be caught up by week’s end.   • The SunPass Call Center and the SunPass Customer Service Walk-In Center at 7941 Glades Road in Boca Raton are temporarily closed. The following SunPass Customer Service Walk-In Centers remain open: Snapper Creek, Milepost 19, Florida’s Turnpike, Miami; and 7902 NW 36th St., Unit 203, Doral.

  • Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach will remain closed through Thursday. Go to peggyadams.org.

  • Port Everglades experienced gusts of up to 60 mph with no damage, according to the county’s Office of Public Communications. Fuel trucks are moving with no anticipated shortages of jet, diesel, and fuel deliveries.

  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport remains open.

  • Broward County Transit was operating on a normal schedule Thursday, including Paratransit. Most Community Shuttles, operated in partnership with municipalities are also operating, with the exception of Pembroke Pines which has suspended service until Friday.

  • The Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office remained closed on Thursday.

Broward County updates by city

Deerfield Beach

Alerts: Residents may sign up for city emergency alerts at Deerfield-Beach.com/1695/AlertDFB.

Trash pickup: Collections, including bulk pickup, are expected to resume Thursday, but the city warned that there may be delays on routes.

Fort Lauderdale

City facilities: Normal operations, including trash pick-up, resumed on Thursday.

Transportation and parking: The LauderGo! Water Trolley and Circuit Micro Mover are suspended until further notice.

King tides: In anticipation of king tide impact, Fort Lauderdale city staff placed roadway delineators, no-wake signs and digital signage near vulnerable and low-lying neighborhoods, according to the city’s update on Monday night. Streets in neighborhoods near Cordova Road are expected to be closed to car traffic during king tide peaks. The king tides forecast for the remainder of this week: , 12:04 p.m. Thursday and 12:09 a.m., and 12:54 p.m. Friday.

Canceled: GENVAS’ Café Society Pride, a music salon featuring tenor Jason Antone on Thursday at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd., has been canceled. Ticketholders may request refunds via 954-709-7447 or have their tickets honored at future Café Society concerts in March 2023. Go to Genvas.org. ArtServe is closed until Thursday.

Rescheduled: At the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Thursday’s performance by Spyro Gyra has been moved to March 9. Visit browardcenter.org or call 954-462-0222.

Hollywood

Rescheduled:

  • A Wednesday PINKTOBER Dinner at Abiaka in Hollywood’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 1 Seminole Way, has been rescheduled for Oct. 4. The five-course dinner led by chef Dominique Crenn benefits the American Cancer Society. For ticketholders who have booked reservations, the Hard Rock will reach out directly “to reschedule or provide refunds,” the venue said on Tuesday morning.   • The Thursday Lynyrd Skynyrd concert at the hotel’s Hard Rock Live has been rescheduled for Oct. 16. Ticketholders who can no longer attend may secure refunds at point of purchase between now and Oct. 16. Visit SeminoleHardRockHollywood.com or call 954-316-2900.

Lauderhill

City operations: Lauderhill resumed normal city operations on Thursday. Residents who missed bulk trash collection on Wednesday will have a make-up day on Thursday.

Openings: All administrative offices and all parks and facilities reopened Thursday. The Community Bus Shuttle will operate on its regular schedule as well. Visit Lauderhill-FL.gov.

Miramar

City operations: Normal business operations resumed on Thursday, according to miramarfl.gov/286/Hurricane-Preparedness.

Trash pickup: There have been no changes to garbage, bulk and recycling pickup, according to the city’s website. Residents may sign up for city alerts via MiramarFL.gov/alertmiramar.

Oakland Park

Closures: Trash pick-up is suspended until further notice.

Pembroke Pines

Closures and cancellations: City Hall and administrative offices are open at regularly scheduled hours. City parks remain closed and will reopen on Friday. Go to PPines.com.

Crews will begin removing the debris generated by Tuesday’s tornado on Friday. They will make an initial sweep of the area and then return for a final circuit after the weekend. “They intend to have this completed by mid to end of next week,” according to the city’s website.

North Perry Airport: About 30 aircraft and a facility were damaged by a tornado that hit Tuesday evening. The airport is closed until further notice.

Sunrise

City operations: Regular operations resumed on Thursday.

Weston

Trash pickup: Garbage collection continues under its regular operating schedule.

Tamarac

Closures and cancellations: The City Commission meeting set for Wednesday was canceled, with agenda items moved to the Oct. 12 meeting. All city board and committee meetings scheduled through Friday are also canceled. All city parks are closed through Thursday. All evening youth and adult classes are canceled until further notice. Wilton Manors

Closed: SunServe, the nonprofit agency serving South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community, remains closed on Thursday. Those experiencing mental health or medical emergencies “should call 911 or your local emergency room,” SunServe officials said. Rescheduled: The final hearing on the city budget scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 has been rescheduled to Oct. 3 at 5:30 p.m. Visit wiltonmanors.com.

Postponed: A Behind the Red Curtain public forum that had been scheduled for Wednesday, titled “Secrets of a Beauty Queen: No Tea, No Shade” and hosted by Island City Stage, 2304 N. Palm Beach County updates by city

Boca Raton

Rescheduled: City Council and CRA meetings or workshops that were previously scheduled for Wednesday have been rescheduled for 3 p.m. Oct. 12.

Delray Beach

Trash pickup: Waste Management collection services resumed on Thursday, according to a tweet posted Wednesday. For updates, visit delraybeachfl.gov.

Closure: The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, 4000 Morikami Park Road, remained closed on Thursday “and will reopen when it is safe to resume regular operations,” museum officials wrote in a Wednesday afternoon release. Call 561-495-0233 or go to Morikami.org.

West Palm Beach

Trash pickup: Trash and debris collections are suspended Wednesday and may resume Thursday.

Canceled: The city’s Veterans Benefit Fair scheduled was canceled, according to a statement from County Commissioner Maria Sachs, citing Gov. Ron DeSantis’ State of Emergency declaration. The fair is expected to be rescheduled for a later date. Go to WPB.org.

Rescheduled:

  • A Wednesday Hispanic Heritage Panel Discussion hosted by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, 300 N. Dixie Highway, has been rescheduled for Oct. 19 “due to weather concerns.” Those who registered and can’t attend the makeup date should call 561-832-4164, ext. 306. Go to PBCHistory.org.

  • Palm Beach County Public Schools’ College & Career Fair, set for Wednesday, has been rescheduled for Nov. 1 “due to inclement weather, and potentially difficult travel conditions for recruiters,” according to a tweet on Monday. Miami-Dade County updates by city

Miami

Trash pickup: Garbage, recycling and bulk pick up was suspended Wednesday.

Canceled: A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday through Thursday at the Hilton Miami Dadeland, 9100 N. Kendall Drive, has been scuttled due to Ian.

Closures: Zoo Miami, at 12400 SW 152nd St., is closed to the public on Thursday “in an abundance of caution,” says Ron Magill, the zoo’s communications director. Visit zoomiami.org.

Rescheduled: The Wines of Chile’s “Mosaic of Sustainability” event scheduled for Wednesday at Rubell Museum, 1100 NW 23rd St., has been rescheduled for Nov. 17. For current ticketholders unable to attend the makeup date, refunds can be requested at point of purchase. Go to Eventbrite.com.

The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County remains closed on Thursday. However, the department is available to respond to emergency and urgent public health issues and may be reached at 305-324-2400.

The Institute of Contemporary Art Miami is closed Wednesday. “We anticipate normal operating hours tomorrow, Thursday, September 29, conditions permitting,” the institute said. Visit icamiami.org.

Miami Beach

Closures and cancellations: The city’s outdoor parks and recreation programs are all canceled Wednesday through Thursday “due to inclement weather in the forecast,” according to a Tuesday alert posted on the city’s website. Indoor activities will continue as scheduled, including the after-school program. Meanwhile, all Miami Beach OnStage events on Thursday and Friday have been postponed, while The Bass Museum of Art will be closed Wednesday and the Miami Beach Bandshell will be closed Wednesday through Friday. Parking: The city’s Parking Department planned to open all municipal garages for free access for residents needing to park vehicles outside of flood-prone areas, from 5 p.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Thursday. Residents must provide proof of residency when exiting the garage. Excluded are garages at the Miami Beach Convention Center, City Hall and Fifth Street and Alton Road.

Trash pickup: Regular trash pickups were suspended Wednesday, but recycling was expected to continue as scheduled.

North Miami Beach

Trash pickup: Coastal Waste & Recycling canceled recycling pickups scheduled for Wednesday and rescheduled for Oct. 1. All regular waste, recycling, and bulk waste services were expected to resume on Thursday.

Parks & Recreation: Facilities and programs are closed on Wednesday and Thursday.

Library: All services and programs are closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Library services will remain available online at nmblib.weebly.com.

Doral

Closures and cancellations: The Doral Trolley and Freebee services are suspended for Wednesday and Thursday. The Doral Government Center and all parks are closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Boating

The South Florida Water Management District closed all navigational locks at the end of operating hours at 6 p.m. Tuesday. They will be reopened as weather conditions warrant.
