Hurricane Ian forces Middle Georgia football to reschedule. Here are the new game times

Several Middle Georgia schools rescheduled their football games in anticipation of Hurricane Ian later this week, school officials said.

All Bibb County schools playing home games moved their games to Thursday for safety reasons, attempting to avoid the heavy rain predicted to roll into Macon starting Friday.

“Everything is strategic, and safety is first,” said Bibb County Athletic Director Kevin Grooms. “With all our athletes, it’s our number one priority. It’s best to be proactive and stay ahead of things.”

Bibb County didn’t have any game scheduled for Thursday night this week.

Westside’s matchup against Perry is the only exception. That game is not hosted by Westside, so the decision to reschedule will have to be made by Perry High School and Houston County Schools.

Grooms said Bibb County expects to have a decision from Perry by Wednesday on whether the game will be moved.

There is a possibility that the hurricane brings heavy rain as early as Thursday night. If that happens and games have to be canceled, Grooms says they will be rescheduled soon.

“We’re playing region games right now, pretty much conference games, which have to be played,” Grooms said. “If it comes up to not playing on Thursday, we would contact GHSA about getting permission to schedule games during the week next week or another week.”

One of the only local teams confirmed to play Friday is ACE, who are away at Kendrick in Columbus and will avoid the storm. Bibb County also rescheduled its middle school athletics from Thursday to Wednesday.

Mary Persons has moved its game as well, while Jones County and Warner Robins play away but are still rescheduled to play Thursday due to decisions by the host schools.

Houston County schools playing at home have not been moved up. Northside is a notable team that is still slated to play in a home game against Tift County on Friday, pending a move by Houston County.
