Hurricane Ian: Jacksonville & Northeast Florida sports events postponed, canceled

Even before its projected landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast, Hurricane Ian is shaking up Northeast Florida's sports scene.

The hurricane forced the cancellation or postponement of dozens of events across the Jacksonville area, including high school and college competitions. Jacksonville University, the University of North Florida, Edward Waters University and Flagler College have postponed, moved up or called off numerous events.

The storm has also wiped out hundreds of high school contests statewide, including the important Week 6 of high school football. Under Florida High School Athletic Association rules, all football games in district competition — including more than a dozen in the Jacksonville area — must be made up at some point, making for a hectic schedule to come for coaches, players and administrators.
