Hurricane Ian leaves trail of destruction in Florida. Here's what we know about the storm

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Costa Caya, on the Southwest Florida coast at 3:10 p.m Wednesday at near Category 5 strength, after the eyewall moved onshore at Sanibel and Captiva islands around noon.

At least 68 people have been confirmed dead following the storm: 61 in Florida, four in North Carolina and three in Cuba.

Ian made landfall in South Carolina Friday and the storm's remnants were dumping rain on the northeast Monday, triggering some of the worst flooding in more than a decade in Virginia.
