Hurricane Ida federal disaster assistance deadline approaching for 8 Miss. counties

The deadline for Mississippi homeowners, renters, business owners and nonprofits in eight counties to apply for federal disaster assistance for damages caused by Hurricane Ida is less than two weeks away.

Residents in Amite, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, Pike, Walthall and Wilkinson counties have until Dec. 22 to apply for the help, according to a Federal Emergency Management Agency news release. Residents can apply for by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov, calling 800-621-3362 or using the FEMA mobile application, the news release stated.

When filling out the application, people should have the following information available:

  • Address of the primary dwelling where damage occurred

  • Current mailing address, telephone number and Social Security number

  • Insurance information

  • Total annual household income

  • Routing and account numbers for checking or savings accounts for direct deposit

  • A description of disaster damage and losses

FEMA officials can provide an American Sign Language or other language interpreter, real-time captioning or alternative formats such as Braille, large print, audio or electronic versions to help residents when applying.

The U.S. Small Business Administration is also offering low-interest disaster loans to help with repairing and replacing damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other assets. The deadline is also Dec. 22.

Residents can apply for a SBA loan online at https://disasterloan.sba.giv/ela or call 800-659-2955. Those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing can call 800-877-8339.
