Hurricane Idalia and travel: RSW in Fort Myers remains open. Check with airlines on flights

Southwest Florida International Airport remains open for business.

That status could change, with Hurricane Idalia gaining strength, so passengers should continue to monitor the situation.

"Everything is operating at this time. We will be posting any changes on the website and socials," said Victoria Moreland, a spokeswoman for the airport, in an email.

The website can be found at flyrsw.com.

On the website, the airport warns there may be changes to flights, due to changing weather conditions. It suggests that passengers check with their airline for the "most up-to-date information."

It posted the same message on its Facebook page.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the airport's website showed only one flight had been canceled, with most of them running on time, and reporting no major delays.

The airport in south Fort Myers saw no major damage from Hurricane Ian in September. However, it was forced to shut down to commercial flights for seven days.

Page Field, Lee County's smaller business and general aviation airport, is also operating as usual, with no interruptions due to the approaching storm. It too saw disruptions from Ian, but little damage.

Both Southwest Florida International and Page Field were used for humanitarian efforts after Ian, while briefly closed to the public.

Elsewhere in the state, Tampa International Airport suspended operations Tuesday, ahead of the storm, a minute after midnight, saying it would remain closed "until it can assess any damages later in the week."  Meanwhile, St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport announced it would shut down for 24 hours beginning Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport remained open early Tuesday and had not announced plans to close. However, it urged passengers to contact their airline for flight updates.

Punta Gorda Airport didn't close for the storm, but Allegiant canceled all of its flights to and from the airport on Wednesday, with plans to resume operations on Thursday.

The airline had no flights scheduled there on Tuesday.
