In US news and current events today, both the Mississippi and the Neches Rivers reportedly started flowing in the opposite direction when they were hit by Hurricane Laura, a Category 4 storm with winds blowing up to 150 miles per hour. The hurricane has been compared to 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, in which the water in Louisiana also reversed course due to strong winds reaching 125 mph. Hurricane Laura did not wreak the same lasting damage as Katrina, but many were still left without power and substantial damage to their homes. At least 10 people in Louisiana were killed in total. Laura hit the town of Lake Charles, LA, particularly hard. One resident said that, despite the destruction, the people of Lake Charles have come together in their time of need. There is widespread consensus among experts that the climate crisis is contributing to an uptick in extreme weather and making many natural disasters more intense. Rising sea levels &
warmer ocean temperatures have been shown to increase hurricanes’ intensity. It’s estimated Hurricane Laura was responsible for approx $9 billion in total damages.
