Hurricane season 2022: Here's a list of emergency shelters in Okaloosa and Walton counties

In the event of an emergency, the following buildings may be open for residents.

Shelters for Okaloosa County:

Not all emergency shelters are automatically open during an evacuation. Several factors determine which shelters will be open. The Primary Shelter for Okaloosa County is Davidson Middle School in Crestview. This will always be the first shelter open.

Shelters for Walton County:

Freeport High School is the first shelter that will be open in Walton County. It is a general population, pet friendly, and special needs shelter. You must preregister for the special needs shelter at https://www.co.walton.fl.us/1194/Special-Needs-Shelter-Registration.

As the need arises, other shelters will be opened.

For these shelter openings, follow the suggestions below in developing an emergency plan.

• Listen to local radio stations for updates

• Familiarize yourself with information available, any time there is a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico or off the Atlantic coast of Florida

• Know your route to the shelter that is open, or if going out of town pre-plan your route

• Keep your vehicle fuel tank topped off, and get extra cash out prior to the storms arrival

• Make sure you have enough prescription medications to last at least a week without a refill

• If going to a hotel secure your reservations with a credit card prior to leaving town

• Leave early to avoid traffic jams
