Will hurricane season start before June 1? NHC says no tropical cyclones expected, for now

For a seven-year streak from 2015 to 2021, the Atlantic hurricane season got an early start.

Based on forecasts from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, it doesn't look like that'll happen in 2023.

Meteorologists at the hurricane center had been recently tracking a non-tropical low pressure system off the coast of Florida and South Carolina; however, the system weakened just before Memorial Day. No tropical cyclones are expected over the next seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Did 2023 hurricane season start early?

So far, no. While there was a formation of a subtropical storm in mid-January, the short-lived storm did not affect land.

Previously, the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season kicked off Jan. 12 with Hurricane Alex. According to the Weather Channel, Alex was the second Atlantic hurricane on record to start in January (Hurricane Alice formed on New Year's Eve 1954).

The first named storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season will be Arlene.
