Husband killed, wife critically injured in ATV crash in Marion Oaks on Friday night

A couple riding an all-terrain vehicle, or ATV, crashed in Marion County late Friday evening, resulting in one death and the other passenger critically injured, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Here's what we know:

When?

Florida Highway Patrol officials said the incident occurred shortly after 11:15 p.m. on May 26.

Where?

The crash happened along Southwest 56th Avenue, near Southwest 167th Place in Marion Oaks.

What happened?

Troopers said a 41-year-old man was driving a Can-Am ATV with his 40-year-old wife as the passenger. They said the man was riding the ATV illegally on the roadway traveling southbound on Southwest 56th Avenue.

Authorities said the driver did not see a parked utility trailer in the roadway in time and slammed into it. Law enforcement officials said the couple was ejected off the ATV and onto the roadway.

Death and injuries

FHP officials said the man was pronounced dead at the location by a Marion County Fire Rescue supervisor. The passenger was transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital with critical injuries.

Officials said the couple ride in the area often, as they live in Marion Oaks. Their names were not provided.
