Husband, wife arraigned in Boysville murder case

A husband and wife arrested in North Carolina were arraigned Tuesday on murder charges related to the woman found dead at the abandoned Boysville facility in Frenchtown Township.

Steven Douglas Bails Jr., 44, and Narena Picola Bails, 24, are the fifth and six individuals to be arraigned in connection with the death of Kayla Sedoskey, a 23-year-old mother whose body was found in the Boysville facility on March 2.

The Bailses were arraigned in Monroe County District Court before Judge Amanda L. Eicher on charges of open murder and conspiracy to commit open murder, Michigan State Police reported. Their bonds were set at $1 million each.

The open murder charge allows a jury to determine the degree of murder should the case go to trial.

The Bailses were arrested in North Carolina, where Steven Bails had a standoff on April 14 in New Hanover County with the U.S. Marshals Service before being taken into custody, according to state police and a report from TV station WECT.

A competency hearing for Narena Bails is scheduled for June 7 in district court, according to online court records. A probable cause conference for Steven Bails is scheduled for May 17, also in district court. Both proceedings are to be heard by Judge Michael C. Brown.

Four other suspects have also been arrested in connection with Sedoskey’s death: Sierra Nicole Bemis, Brin David Westley Smith, Kaylyn Ramsey and Alexander Feko. They all had probable cause conferences before Brown rescheduled from Wednesday to May 17.

At a probable cause conference, the defense typically tells the court whether they intend to have a preliminary examination or if they want to waive the exam and have the case bound over to circuit court for further proceedings. A preliminary exam is where the prosecution has to prove to a judge that a crime was committed and the defendants were likely to have committed the crime.

Bemis, Smith and Ramsey are each charged with open murder and conspiracy to commit open murder. Feko is charged with three counts of accessory after the fact to a felony and one count of tampering with evidence. All are being held at the Monroe County Jail on bond.

The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office is still reviewing the case for possible charges against other suspects, state police said.

Anyone with information relating to Sedoskey’s death is asked to contact Detective Sgt. Michael Peterson at 734-242-3500.

Steven Bails also is charged with failure to comply with sex offender reporting duties, according to online court records. A probable cause conference in that case was rescheduled from Wednesday to May 17. He was convicted in 2002 in Monroe County Circuit Court of a charge of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration, according to the Michigan Sex Offender Registry.

Steven Bails and the former Narena Cherry, both of Monroe, received a marriage license from the Monroe County Clerk's Office in February.
