Husband worries when he sees wife crying in car. She’d just won a big lottery prize

A mother of four in Maryland was in for a big surprise when she went to go pick up one of her children.

The woman, who considers herself to be a “Lottery regular,” decided to get a Powerball ticket because the jackpot was “high enough to get her attention,” Maryland lottery officials said in an Oct. 5 news release.

The 30-year-old woman from Upper Marlboro later found out she was a winner when she, her husband and one of her children drove to go pick up another one of their kids, lottery officials said.

While waiting for her husband to come back with their child, she scanned her Powerball ticket with her phone. The total winnings flashed on the screen, bringing her to tears, the release says.

Her $10 ticket had turned into $50,000, lottery officials said. She matched four of the five balls in addition to the Powerball to win that prize.

When her husband and child returned, there was initial confusion on why the woman was crying.

“I saw her face and asked, ‘What’s going on?’” the man said in the release.

His first thought was that something was wrong, he said, but then his wife showed him the good news. The man was in disbelief, lottery officials said

They later claimed their winnings in Baltimore. Now they’re planning to “make a major lifestyle adjustment,” lottery officials said.

The family plans to put a down payment on a home, the release says.

But the couple’s days of playing the lottery aren’t over. With the Powerball jackpot continuing to rise, the pair said they are already in the process of testing their luck again.

“Actually, we just purchased more tickets yesterday,” the husband said in the release.

The Powerball jackpot has risen to about $1.4 billion with a cash value of $643.7 million as of Oct. 6, and the next drawing is Oct. 7.

Upper Marlboro is about 20 miles southeast of Washington, D.C.

What to know about the Powerball

To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.

Tickets cost $2 and can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
