Huskies open with shutout victory

Aug. 27—STORRS — McKenna Sergi and Jasmijn Damman scored goals Friday as the University of Connecticut field hockey team opened its season with 2-0 non-conference victory over UMass Lowell in a match shortened due to inclement weather midway through the fourth quarter at the George Sherman Family Sports Complex.

Sergi opened the scoring for the Huskies (1-0) 1:56 into the second quarter and Damman provided insurance with her first career goal late in the third period.

Cheyenne Sprecher made three saves in the win.

UConn hosts Monmouth on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Thursday's Results MEN'S SOCCER Charlotte 3, UConn 1 STORRS — Scott Testori scored for UConn in its season- opening loss to Charlotte at Morrone Stadium.

Testori tied the game at 1-1 for the Huskies in the 32nd minute after a crossing pass from Mateo Leveque was redirected by Bjorn Nikolajewski.

Alex Willis broke the deadlock for the 49ers (1-0) in 8: 13 into the second half and Jonathan Nyandjo made it 3- 1, 9: 49 after the break.

Willis also assisted on Kameron Lacey's goal — 3: 20 into the game — that opened the scoring for Charlotte.

It marked the first time that UConn lost its season opener since 2017.

The Huskies host Holy Cross on Sunday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER No. 4 South Carolina 3, UConn 0 STORRS — Samantha Chang broke a scoreless tie as the nationally-ranked Gamecocks won the non-conference match- up.

The Huskies ( 1- 1- 1) controlled play for long stretches with possession but were unable to find the back of the net.

Eveleen Hahn had a goal and assist for South Carolina (2-0-1), which played No.1 Florida State to a scoreless tie last week.

Kaitlyn Mahoney made three saves for UConn, which hosts UMass-Lowell on Sunday at 1 p.m.
