Hwy. 80 westbound at Johnny Mercer Blvd. on Wilmington Island closed for traffic fatality

Update:

Georgia State Patrol (GSP) identified Jason Harmon, 39, as the person who died in the single-vehicle crash on Johnny Mercer Boulevard around 5:03 a.m. Friday.

GPS investigators said that Harmon was traveling north on Johnny Mercer Boulevard in a 2014 Nissan Versa when the car traveled onto the shoulder, crossed the eastbound and westbound lanes of State Route 26, and struck a tree on the north shoulder of State Route 26.

Harmon's next of kin has been notified. The crash remains under investigation.

Update: All roadways are re-opened.

At 5:30 a.m., a fatal traffic accident shut down westbound Hwy. 80 at Johnny Mercer Blvd. on Wilmington Island.

According to a notice from Chatham County Police, traffic heading east on Hwy. 80 will be diverted to Johnny Mercer Blvd. Traffic heading west will be rerouted.

There is no timeline on when the road will reopen as the Georgia State Patrol conducts its investigation.
