Hygge things happening at the library

Jan. 5—Sierra Marling

January is Hygge month at the Madison County Public Library.

Hygge (pronounced hoo-guh) is a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or wellbeing. Warm, thick scarves and a crackling fireplace immediately come to mind, but Hygge is really a cultural expression.

"This is actually a way of life in Danish culture," explained Adult Program Coordinator Katlyn Ramsey. "It is a word used to describe clothing and meals and everything. They just take the time to make sure that things are cozy and comforting and nourishing."

Both branches of the Madison County Library will have programs and activities all month long that focus on the essence of Hygge in an effort to give patrons the tools to experience coziness and self-care. Programming is varied and will include events where participants can make felted soap bars, learn about bullet journaling, and even do some yoga.

Ramsey noted the overall purpose goes beyond simple self-care in that this type of programming allows patrons to really connect to their local library.

"We're trying to get back to literacy, information education —just back to the roots of what a library is there for in the community. One of the best ways, in my mind, is to take a moment to take care of yourself. That's one of the first steps to being able to really enrich every aspect of your life, including literacy and learning," she said.

To get started, join library staff for an introduction to all things Hygge at their event, Hello Hygge: Everything you need to know about Hygge on Saturday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Berea location, and from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Richmond. Those who attend will get their own Hygge starter kit and make their own felt succulents.

Ramsey said the spirit of Hygge doesn't have to be celebrated alone. She recommends also attending the library's new book club or attending craft workshops to get cozy with friends.

However, those that can't make the month's programming shouldn't fret. Ramsey said the spirit of Hygge can be achievable for the busiest of people with a quick trip to the library.

"It doesn't get much cozier than coming in, getting a book, going home, having a nice snack, and sitting down and reading a good book. That's kind of the essence of coziness right there," Ramsey said.
