Reason for Hyundai, Kia recalls

Approximately 1.64 million Hyundai vehicles are affected, and approximately 1.73 million Kia models. The cars’ anti-lock brake system (ABS) module can reportedly leak brake fluid, causing an electrical short. This could lead to overcurrent in the ABS, which increases fire risk in the engine compartment, even if the car is parked, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Hyundai is telling owners to visit the dealership nearest them for a module replacement. Kia does not yet have a remedy.

Neither manufacturer has been made aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths relating to the issue. However, they have reported:

  • 21 related car fires (Hyundai)

  • 22 “thermal incidents” with smoke, burning, melting (Hyundai)

  • Four related car fires (Kia)

  • Six instances of melting components (Kia)
