What do Key West and Kansas have in common? This incredible photo op, ranking says

Have you ever taken out your phone or camera to take a photo of a Kansas sunset to post on social media? If so, you’re not alone.

According to a study by Bounce, there are more than 42,000 Instagram posts of the Kansas sky during sunset, which makes the state No. 10 in the top 10 “most Instagrammable” sunset destinations in the world.

What conditions make for a beautiful sunset?

According to National Geographic, the colors occur when sunlight reaches a molecule in the atmosphere, which causes the beam to “scatter” and sends that sunlight in different directions in the sky. Scattering occurs millions of different times before the light reaches your sight.

National Geographic explains in daytime, when the sun is overhead, the scattering happens at shorter lengths and appears blue to our eyesight. However during sunset, when the sun is farther away, the wavelengths are a lot longer, giving off those orange and red hues.
