Find an ice-cold smoothie at a South Florida farm stand this summer

We South Floridians have one goal during our scorching summers: Cooling off. Personally, I crave an ice-cold smoothie when our temps start rising above 85 degrees.

The weather met my criteria this week, so I took a tour of local farm stands to search for satisfying thirst-quenchers. I was thrilled to find so many locally owned stands that blend drinks made of produce grown right here in South Florida, such as key limes, sugar cane juice and, of course, mangoes, which are dropping like crazy from trees at the moment.

Many of the smoothie-selling stands have brainstormed ways to keep you busy for a few hours. Some have WiFi so you can work from their cafe tables; others have petting zoos, farms to explore and unique grocery products available for the tasting. Not all are open every day, so make sure to confirm their hours before you head out. And if you know of a stand I missed, send it over and I’ll add it in; I’m at AskLois@sunsentinel.com.

Open since 1964, Bob Roth’s New River Groves used to be one of the largest citrus growers in South Florida, surrounded by other farms, but the neighborhood has been swallowed up by development and only a small agricultural remnant remains. The site offers not only smoothies but sandwiches, a fudge factory, jams, baked goods, locally made honey and schlocky knickknacks. Freshly made smoothies and vegetable drinks range in price from $7 to $9.95. Try Terry’s Key Lime Pie Shake ($8), sprinkled with its namesake’s graham cracker crumbs and deliciously sweet.
