Ice and rain remain in North Jersey as snow washes away from overnight storm

Last night’s storm brought icy road conditions, power outages and at least a few inches of snow to North Jersey, much of which residents will still have to contend with on this holiday Monday.

As of about 8:30 a.m., Passaic County had about 1,800 customers without power. That number was slightly less at 1,128 customers in Bergen County, with the bulk of that in Elmwood Park. There were less than 200 customers affected in each of Morris, Essex and Sussex counties.

Elmwood Park’s Police Chief Michael Foligno said that the high outages in his town were due to a blown transformer but that it was already being restored.

Inch count: Winter storm Izzy is here. How much snow has fallen in North Jersey so far?

A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the region until 10 a.m. and anyone heading out should expect icy road conditions. Though air temperatures are in the 30s, ground temperatures are slow to rise above freezing and gusty winds could bring down tree branches, according to the advisory.

While the bulk of the storm has moved out, meteorologist Tiffany Fortier at the National Weather Service said that there would still be scattered showers with some snowflakes mixed as cold air moves into the area.

“Last night most people saw some snow,” she said. “The biggest total was about 4 and a half inches in Franklin Lakes but that drops off to just around an inch as you move farther south toward East Rutherford.”

While northern Bergen County towns like Franklin Lakes and Mahwah saw more than 4 inches of accumulation last night, most of that was before dawn and had started to wash away as the storm turned to rain and temperatures rose.
