Ice Storm Warnings remain valid throughout West and into Middle Tennessee through Thursday morning.

As businesses and schools close for the day on Feb. 1 in light of the inclement weather across West Tennessee, the National Weather Service assures that it will not last long.

In a winter weather briefing released on Wednesday morning, NWS Memphis explained the extent of the multi-round precipitation across all of West and extending into Middle Tennessee. The second round of freezing rain and sleet will continue through mid-morning today and the third and final round will last from this afternoon into Thursday morning, according to the report.

The briefing disclosed the state of roads and bridges as being compacted with ice and sleet and up to an additional quarter of an inch of ice is to be expected. NWS detailed that the Ice Storm Warning will remain in effect through Thursday morning at 6 a.m.

Don’t drive if you don’t have to

Jackson Police Department took to their Facebook to warn residents to stay inside if they do not have to be out and to take extra precautions if leaving is necessary. JPD cautioned about particularly slick streets in Jackson including Ridgecrest Road, Old Medina Road, and the bridge on Campbell Street.

Safety tips for driving include avoiding hills, reducing speed, turning into slides, pressing lightly on the brakes, and increasing the following distance by up to six seconds. As JPD encourages travelers to reduce their speed above all else, they note that cars traveling at 35 miles per hour must maintain 600 feet or more of distance from the car in front when driving on icy roads.

There are over 1,000 deaths and 100,000 injuries sustained every year in the U.S. as a result of vehicle crashes during winter weather conditions, according to the NWS.

Power outages and at-home precautions

Per the outage map on the Jackson Energy Authority website, there are currently no electric outages in Jackson and the surrounding towns. Any outages are encouraged to be communicated to JEA through the outage report link. Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation, servicing a large portion of residents between Jackson and Memphis, has also not reported any outages via their map.

JEA also cautions residents to maintain a slow drip of their faucets to maintain water flow and prevent the freezing of pipes.

Additional tips, courtesy of the Jackson Fire Department’s Facebook, encourage residents to exercise carefulness when using alternative heating equipment like space heaters and fuel-burning portable heaters. Space heaters must be kept a minimum of three feet away from all furniture and fuel-burning heaters are to be fully cooled before refueling outside and only with the manufacturer-specified fuel.
