Iconic Atlanta costume shop celebrates its final Halloween

Tucked away along Faulkner Road in Northeast Atlanta, there are 10,000 square feet of fun. It’s all supervised by the costume man.

“Costumes can turn a terrible actor into, ‘Wow! That guy was so cool! Why was that? He looks so cool, right? He just looks so good,’” Jimmy Gough said.

Gough’s background is in theater. His sister, Jane Powell, is the costume shop’s seamstress. “I started sewing at 13. My mom taught me,” Powell said. Together Powell and Gough have operated Costumes, Etc… for the last 30 years. They say the place has always been a magnet for actors, hip hop artists and the overall cool crowd.

“You don’t get many nervous or angry people in here. You’ve got people who want to have a good time,” Powell said.

This is especially true for Halloween, though this will be Costumes, Etc.’s last. Powell and Gough have decided to retire. The costume man says he’ll miss most things about this place, but not everything. “The worst thing about Halloween in this business is I spend 30 days inside on the most beautiful month of the year in Atlanta. It’s always perfect in October. I’m in here with all the freaks going, ‘Grrrr!’”
