Iconic North Carolina waterfall gets own USPS forever stamp. Check out the postage

The U.S. Postal Service has released 12 new forever stamps to honor the nation’s waterfalls, the agency announced.

“Among nature’s most beautiful wonders, waterfalls come in all shapes and sizes, from serene cascades to mighty cataracts,” the agency said in a June 13 news release. “A perennial favorite of photographers, amateur and professional, the visual beauty of waterfalls and their natural surroundings is not their only appeal. The sound of falling water — whether a melodic trickle or a thunderous roar — also draws visitors.”

The new collection includes waterfalls from across the country, in national parks, forests and along hiking trails.

Upper Falls, located off the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, was among the natural features honored in the series. The falls are about 140 west of Charlotte.

“The 60-foot waterfall descends the steep rock face, sending sprays that support many types of ferns and wildflowers,” the agency said.

The stamps were created from images taken by American photographers.

Renowned nature photographer Tim Fitzharris provided the image of Upper Falls. He is a writer and editor for Popular Photography & Imaging Magazine, and one of “the most published nature calendar photographers in the world,” according to his website.

“The Postal Service is proud to celebrate the natural world through our stamps, and these gorgeous new stamps will bring the beauty of these waterfalls to millions of people who will see them on the cards and letters they receive in their mailboxes,” Michael Elston, Secretary of the Board of Governors for USPS, said in a first-day-of-issue ceremony at Yellowstone National Park.

“Each waterfall is beautiful in its own way,” the agency said. “But what they all have in common are the positive emotions they bring forth, such as the serenity instilled by a gentle cascade or the awe inspired by an immense cataract.”
